Water Heaters

Water Heater
Heat pump water heaters are the most energy-efficient type of water heater, capable of delivering 3 to 4 times more heat energy than they consume when installed properly.

Benefits

  • Supplemental Heat
Needed in times of high-water use. Uses electric heating elements which consume more electricity but only operate when necessary. Supplemental heat mode can be activated manually but is less efficient.
  • Tax Credits and Other Incentives
There could be tax credits available and other incentives to install efficient heat pump water heaters.

How it Works

A heat pump water heater works by transferring heat from one place to another, much like a refrigerator. It captures heat from the surrounding air and uses it to warm your home's water. Since it moves existing heat rather than generating it, this process is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Things to Consider

  • Installation
While heat pump water heaters can be a great way to save money on energy bills, they do have some key differences worth considering before deciding to install.
    • Noise
Heat pump water heaters make noise when operating, at a similar volume to a dishwasher or window air conditioner. Due to this, consider placement in your home carefully.
    • Space Requirements
While the specifics will vary by size and model, heat pump water heaters all need access to enough air to effectively pull heat out of it to put into the water. In cases where they have to go in a small closet, venting would have to be added to accommodate this need.
    • Condensate Drains
Heat pump water heaters create condensation which has to be removed from the home via a condensate drain.
    • Setpoints
As with all water heaters, having a higher than needed setpoint on your water heater’s thermostat will cause them to run longer, leading to lower efficiency and increased maintenance issues. We recommend setting your temperature between 115-125 degrees in most cases.
    • Smart Features
Many heat pump water heaters offer smart features, such as push-button controls for temperature adjustments or vacation modes, as well as smart phone controls or leak detection systems.
