Ever Wondered Why It Costs More to Heat Your Home than to Cool It?
Posted on November 23rd, 2021
The amount your HVAC system works to heat or cool your home depends on the difference between temperatures outside and your desired indoor temperature.
As you can see, the difference in indoor and outdoor temps is significantly less in the summer than the winter. In both seasons, the type and efficiency of the HVAC system and the tightness and thermal properties of the home and duct system also become a factor in energy usage.
Although heat pumps are the most energy-efficient type of electric heat, extremely cold temperatures can lead to higher usage. During these extremely cold temps, heat pumps often use heat strips, or aux heat, to help the system heat your home. Heat strips use two to three times more electricity.
First Electric recommends keeping your thermostat at 70 degrees or below during the winter.
